早期智人（early stage H.sapiens）又称古人（Paleoanthropus）.生活于距今约20万年至5万年前的古人类.目前世界上发现的早期智人化石70多处,世界上最早的早期智人化石的地点有两个：一个是西班牙的直布罗陀,发现于1848年另一个是德国迪塞尔多夫（Dusseldorf）附近的尼安德特（Neanderthal）河谷一个山洞中发现（包括一个成年男性的颅骨和一些肢骨化石,约生活于7万年前）,发现于1856年,由于直布罗陀头骨化石发现后没有引起人们的注意,其资料直到1864年才发表出来,而最早被人们重视的是尼安德特河谷发现的人类化石.因而过去古人类学上曾将早期智人化石统称为尼安德特人（Homo sapiens neanderthalen-sis,尼人）.
　　早期智人（古人）阶段的化石,在亚、非、欧三洲许多地区都有发现.古人的主要特征是脑量较大（男女平均为1400毫升）,但脑的结构却比较原始.眉嵴发达,前额倾斜,鼻部肩宽,颌部前突.虽然较猿人进步,但仍有不少原始性质.我国广东的马坝人（1个头盖骨,生活于10万年前,1958年发现）、湖北的长阳人（1块左侧上颌骨断片及其上2个牙齿,生活于4～6万年前,1956年发现）、山西的丁村人（3颗牙齿,生活于10万年前,1954年发现）、陕西的大荔人（1个较完整的头骨,1978年发现）、山西的许家窑人（顶骨3块、枕骨2块,左上颌骨一块和一些零星的顶骨破片和牙齿,生活于旧石器时代中期,1976、1977年发现）,以及法国的圣沙拜尔（La Chapelle-aux-saints）人（1908）、赞比亚的罗德西亚（Rhodesia）人（1921）、巴基斯坦的斯虎耳（Skhul）人（1931～1932）等均属尼人类型,但体质上有明显差异.有的学者认为,古人可分两类：以尼安德特人和圣沙拜尔人为代表的一类称为典型尼人和以斯虎耳人为代表的非典型尼人.非典型尼人脑量小于典型尼人,而形态特征则更接近能人即早期猿人.一般认为,西欧尼人是人类发展过程中一个绝灭的旁支.古人打制的石器种类更多、更精细,已有复合工具；不但会用天然火,而且会人工生火；已穿兽皮.开始有埋葬死者的风俗.社会形态已进入早期母系氏族社会,已从族内婚发展到族外婚,即一氏族的成年男子集体与另一氏族的成年女子结婚.
　　早期智人也称古人,生活于距今25万年至4万年前.其体质形态已和现代人接近,但仍带有一些原始特点,如眉脊发达,前额低斜、鼻部扁宽、颌部前突等,脑容量平均为1350毫升.其化石目前在亚、非、欧三洲有多处发现.
　　至于典型尼人的消失问题有两种意见：一是认为尼人在当地进化为晚期智人；二是认为尼人的消失不是由于就地进化,而是由于较进步类型的新居民的侵入,取代了当地的尼人.
