As parents, they show their love for children in many different ways. They cook delicious food, buy new clothes for them. They care about their children’s studies as well. Parents always say to their children like these all the time, “You must study hard”, “You should finish your homework before you go to bed!”, “Why don’t you prepair for your exam?”.

When the children get bad marks, their parents will be very angry. They would stop their children watching TV, playing games or even going outside until they make progress.

Why? Most families have only one child. The only child is the hope of the whole family, therefore, they want their child to be the best.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching (紧握) at one another’s hands for reassurance.

They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager

can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

56. In this passage, the author wants to tell _______.

A. teenagers to try to pursue their real selves

B. readers to try to be popular with people around

C. parents to try to control and guide their children

D. people to try to understand and respect each other

57. The author disapproves of rebelling teenagers _______.

A. growing away from their parents B. following the popularity trend

C. walking a new way on their own D. turning to their friends for help

58. The phrase “ larger cocoon” at the end of the second paragraph refers to _______.

A. the distractive and variable society B. the dazzling music world

C. the parental care and love D. the popularity wave in the society

59. What does the author think of advertisements?

A. Convincing. B. Instructive. C. Influential. D. Authoritative.

60. According to the author, what might happen when a teenager stands up against the popularity wave and follows his/her own path?

A. He/She falls behind the time. B. He/She loses good friends.

C. He/She faces all kinds of criticism. D. He/She gains valuable popularity.

B

“Dr Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?”

The usual laughter followed, and people stirred(骚动)to go. Papaderos held up his hand and stilled the room and looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was serious and seeing from my eyes that I was.

“I will answer your question.”

Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket, he fished into a leather billfold and brought out a very small round mirror, about the size of a quarter. And what he said went like this:

“When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place.

I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece. This one and by scratching it on a stone, I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine in deep holes and crevices(裂缝)and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find.

I kept the little mirror and as I went about my growing up, I would take it out in idle moments and continue the challenge of the game. As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game but a what I might do with my life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light truth, understanding, knowledge is there, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.

I am a fragment(碎片)of a mirror whose whole design and shape l do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world into the black places in the hearts of men and change some things in some people. Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life.”

61. On hearing the author’sat first.

A. laughed at his foolishness B. doubted his seriousness

C. wasn’t sure of the answer D. wasn’t interested at all

62. How did Dr Papaderos get the small round mirror when he was a child?

A. He found it on the road and made it round.

B. A dying German soldier gave him as a present.

C. He chanced to find it in the street while playing.

D. He put the broken pieces together and made it.

63. Why did Dr Papaderos like the small round mirror so much as a child?

A. Because it could shine the places where the sun couldn’t reach.

B. Because he was too poor to afford other toys.

C. Because he believed it would bring good luck to him.

D. Because it told him a lot about what life really meant to him.

64. The underlined “metaphor”A. purpose B. source C. light D. symbol

“Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move,” said David Belle, the founder of parkour(跑酷).

Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring.

But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from walls and

over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the

James Bond in the movie Casino Royale? Bond jumps down from a roof to a

windowsill and then runs several blocks over on the way. It is just

because of Bond’s wonderful performances that the sport has become popular

worldwide.

Yes, that’s parkour, an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to

another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body. Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.

Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.

Overcome all the obstacles on the course and in life it is part of the philosophy(理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination, go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life to reach the destination successfully. A parkour lover said, “I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life, my way to do everything.”

Another philosophy we’ve learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone, at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.

66. Parkour has become popular throughout the world because of A. its founder, David Belle B. the film, Casino Royale

C. its risks and tricks D. the varieties of participants

67. The underlined word “obstacles” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “”.

A. streets B. objects C. barriers D. roofs

68. Which of the following is true of parkour?

A. It challenges human abilities. B. It is a good but boring sport.

C. It needs special training. D. It is a team sport.
