I called to my in Chinese, ―How many do you have this time?‖

―Eight hundred and six pieces, that’s $40.30!‖ she answered. I’d been

living in my Los Angeles flat for over four years when my parents

came for a six-month visit from China. I’d noticed that the

bottles and cans they’d collected on the road were worth 5 cents (美分)

each. When their stay with us ended, I felt free, though I was a supporter of environmental in fact.

南京雨花区教育信息网。

By the time my daughter began school, I was expected to raise money for the school. I felt very stressed. How could I work out the problem? , a good idea came across my mind: how about uniting (结合) the two — environmental education and raise money? I joined an organization called LACES. It had 1,600 students, parents and teachers. If my two elderly parents could $300 in six months from recycling (回收), why couldn’t we multiply (乘以) that number by at least 800? My team organized a day for students and parents to bottles and cans directly to school. We called it the Green for Green program. The first one raised only $145. But we planned more programs. With each one, the numbers started to look : $145…$400 …$481. The more success we had, the more people joined our team.

Today, LACES teachers keep boxes in their classrooms for bottles and cans. Students collect recyclables and them in boxes. Parents collect at their offices. LACES parents have told me that where they used to see litter, they see Green for Green program started in 2011, we have raised $15,500 for the school and recycled about 75,000 pounds of waste.

I believe that our effort (努力) is followed by the others in the community, and that the result is multiplied. I used to my parents’ recycling project during their visit here. Now I laugh at myself for getting the benefit (益处) from their clever ideas. They may never anyone beyond their family. However, their small effort has led to big change, one that inspires (激励) family, friends, children, and even strangers.

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.

I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (交款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.

Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms."You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you," said the woman."It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now."

Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.

I would like to say "thank you" to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets (毯子) and clothes for the homeless people in the fire. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.

Being shy is a tough thing at any age, and especially hard if you are a teenager. It’s common for adults to be shy too, but you probably don’t notice it that much. If you’re tired of hiding behind an invisible(无形的) wall of safety, do what Ann did to leave shyness behind and come out of your shell.

Ann used to be shy and timid, but now she has changed a lot. The following ideas are the things she did to deal with her shyness:

●Make a promise to yourself to get over your shyness.

●Remember the situations where you feel your shyness holding you back most strongly.

●The next time you are in this situation, do something just a little bit more outgoing than you would normally do (smile, make eye contact, ask a question, etc.).

●Relax and remember that mistakes help you learn and everyone may act strangely at times(Ann believes this is the most important step in the process).

●Repeat Steps 1-4 until you have reached the level of ―outgoingness‖.

Ann also gives us some suggestions:

●This can be a really tough process, but don’t give up, even when you get discouraged (感到沮丧的).

●After you’ve repeated the steps a few times, it’ll get easier and easier.

●It takes a lot of practice and hard work to get over shyness.

We’d really like to hear about your experiences and ideas. Please share them with us.

I recently spent two years in the Arctic filming the series Blue Planet. I love being in an Arctic environment. Of course it's very cold, but it must be a healthy place because you never catch a cold once there.

Filming underwater involves cutting through thick ice and diving in tied to a line. The person at the other end has to be ready to pull you out fast if necessary.

At first I was a research diver for the British Antarctic (南极) Survey project. However, science wasn’t very exciting to me. I'd always enjoyed photography, and whenever camera teams passed through, they encouraged me to watch and learn. I began filming in 1985 and have been filming Arctic and Antarctic wildlife ever since.

I liked getting face to face with the animals. I haven't been in the water with killer whales yet, but I plan to. Of course, it's dangerous if you choose the wrong moment. They're big animals and can move fast, so I'd be silly to film them when they’re hunting.

I've never had problems with polar bears, although once I was frightened when one tried to get into my tent.Polar bears are clever and dangerous. But I made this one see I wasn't about to attack it—I'm sure it realized I wouldn't hurt it.

At home, I work in the mornings and spend the afternoons swimming to keep fit.Now I'm fifty, filming is harder than before for me. The challenge for me is to continue to take high-quality pictures.

( ) 29. In this passage, Doug Allan is describing ____________________.

A. the wildlife in the Arctic and Antarctic

B. the difficulties of having to work alone

C. the challenge of the environment he works in

D. the beauty of the Arctic and Antarctic

( ) 30. About killer whales Dough says that _______________________.

A. he will only film them at a safe distance

B. he is confident in the water with them

C. he tried to film them when they were hunting

D. he believes there’s a safe chance to film them

( ) 31. How does Dough describe his experience with the polar bear?

A. The animal was much more afraid than Dough was.

B. Dough felt nervous that polar bear might come back.

C. The polar bear seemed to know Dough wasn’t a danger.

D. Dough realized he was wrong to believe the polar bear.

usual daily things. And then I lay down hoping to fall

asleep quickly, so my new day will hurry up and arrive. A

new day with a completely new sun. But as I lay there

and wait for the world to turn half way around, I think

about her. And sometimes I smile, and sometimes that smile will turn into a snicker(窃笑), and then often that snicker will turn into a burst of laughter.南京雨花区教育信息网。

And then there are times I get that lump(肿块) in my throat and that tight feeling in my chest, and sometimes that I can’t stand that feeling and begins to turn into a tear, and often that tear increases greatly itself and I can no longer fight the feeling and I lose the battle. Then somehow through either the joy or the sadness I drift and find myself asleep. Then the dreams begin and keep me company until my new day arrives.南京雨花区教育信息网。

When I am awake it’s with such excitement because I tell myself this could be the day that every other day has led up to and the first day of the rest of my life. I quickly wear my smile because I really want her to see me at my very best. Then I look out the window because, even though I know it’s dawn, I still have to confirm I’ve been given another chance to find her.

And there it is…the sun, even when it’s cloudy; somehow I still see it. And it smiles at me and I say, “Thank you,” and I smile back.

Thank you for the sun, which began my new day. Thank you for feeling confident when I got up this morning that I would find her in this new day. But most of all, thank you for me not having to ever wait on another sunrise because whenever I want to see it, I will look at her and there it shall always be, in her eyes; she will forever hold it for me.

She is my sunrise, my dawn, my new day.

A. wear a smile once again B. forget what happened the day before

C. eat dinner and clean up the house D. thank his life for the new day
