“谁第一个举手，我就嫁给谁！”秋红的话才说了一半，秃子就高高地举起了手。挨着秃子的王二根又举了手，又有三十多名青壮年举了手。秋红的牙都痒，她睁圆了杏眼，对着人群里的王二根大声骂：“王二根你个窝囊废，这辈子你就输给秃子吧你，我这就搬到秃子家去，悔死你！”秋红气得跺脚，秃子心里美得像吃了蜜。
第二天，花儿一样的秋红就嫁给了秃子。才十七岁。第三天，秃子就吹着口哨参了军，去了前线，去打小日本儿，和王二根，和那三十多名举手的青壮年。
秋红是家里的第四个女娃，娘在秋天的玉米地里正劳作着就留了满地的血，然后生下了她。爹不咸不淡地说又养了个赔钱货，娘就赔着笑脸说女娃一样下湖种地。
秋红就憋着一肚子气。憋着一肚子气长到十七岁的秋红，偏偏要脸蛋有脸蛋，要身段有身段，最是撩人的是她的大眼睛，水汪汪的，会说话。下湖的路上，瞅了谁家的小伙子，谁家的玉米地一准被锄得寸草不剩，滑滑顺顺。顶数王二根家和秃子家的地最滑顺了。王二根生得清秀是公认的好，但木讷，爹和娘也不愿意他太场面儿①；秃子人还算出挑，可他调皮、逆反，秋红也不讨厌他，但他是秃子。王二根有板有眼，秃子不讲规则；王二根辗转反侧睡不着盘算着明早给秋红家挑水了，秃子呢想也不用想，天擦黑就给人家挑满了缸。
