【教材分析】
本课的任务是用比较与对比的手法写作。本单元恰好学习了两位科学家，爱因斯坦和袁隆平。两篇课文分别从人生经历、主要成就以及性格爱好等方面介绍了两位科学家，这两篇课文提供了很好的语言素材，学生们学完后可以对这两位科学家进行比较与对比的写作。
【学情分析】
学生学完两篇课文之后，对两位科学家已经比较熟悉，并且能够用所学短语句型对两位科学家做简单介绍。但是学生对比较和对比这一写作手法是完全陌生的，还不会用表示相似与不同的连接词来连句成文，对两位科学家作比较与对比的写作。
【教学目标】
By the end of the activities, the students are expected
to tell whether a paragraph is comparison or contrast and find the connecting
words used in comparison and contrast
to find some differences and similarities of Einstein and Yuan Longping by using
the connecting words such as while, however, in contrast, similarly, in the same way, etc.

【活动设计】
Activity 1：
1. We have learned about two scientists. Can you tell me their names?
2. Can you find some similarities?
3. Can you find some differences?
设计意图：引入话题，让学生知道什么是比较，什么是对比。
Activity 2：
1. read two paragraphs and tell whether they are comparison or contrast
2. find the connecting words to show comparison and contrast
设计意图: 学生会辨别比较与对比的语段，并找出用来比较与对比的常用连接词。
Activity 3：
1. find related information about Einstein and Yuan Longping
2. make a contrast of the two scientists by using the connecting words
设计意图：用表示对比的连接词描述两位科学家的不同点。
Activity 4:
1. discuss the similarities between Einstein and Yuan Longping
2. speak out the similarities one by one
设计意图：从两位科学家的不同点中找出相同点，为写作做好内容上的铺垫。 Activity 5:
1. find the topic sentence, supporting sentence and details of the passage
2. tell which sentence is a better supporting sentence and know why

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic?
(1) Nowadays, heavy traffic has become the source of greatest complaint in many big cities. (2) As it has seriously influenced people’s daily life and economic development, the highest priority of governments has been given to the problem and many experts have been called in for advice.
(3) A great number of solutions are being offered. (4) Some people suggest that more streets and roads should be constructed. (5) The advantage is obvious: it can reduce traffic density and hence speed up the flow of buses and cars. (6) But traffic flows constantly rise to fill whatever scale of roads and highways are provided for them. (7) And in a city with booming industry, land is precious and cannot be extravagantly used for traffic. (8) So others argue that the number of bicycles and cars should be limited while more bus routs should be opened up because buses can accommodate more passengers. (9) But the decrease in the number of bicycles and cars might give rise to another new set of problems, such as inconvenience to people.
(10) Since neither of the suggestions can effectively solve the problem of heavy traffic, there is an increased awareness that the two solutions may be combined with other possible solutions to produce the best effect.

比较和对照的写作方法
目标：掌握英语作文中比较和对照的写作方法（比较着重相似点，而对照强调不同之处）；
二．使用比较和对照写作方法的一般是说明文与论说文，常见的比较对照有两种方式:
1. 块状比较方式（block method），先A后B，即A1, A2, A3...；B1，B2，B3...。
2. 逐点比较方式（point-by-point method），AB交错，即A1，B1；A2，B2；A3，B3...。comparison作文。
范文一：Country Life and City Life
It is really hard to say which is better than the other, city life or rural life. Both have their merits and shortcomings.
Living in the city has a great many advantages. First, you can enjoy various kinds of foods, both foreign and domestic. Second, there are more
cultural activities in the city – you can go to the concert, the theatre, the movies or the disco club after a day’s hard work. But city life has many problems, too. The overcrowded population, traffic jam, industrial pollution, and the lack of understanding between people may result in disease and unhappiness. Living in the country, however, you can watch the magnificent sunrise and sunset and listen to the bird singing in the tree. If you want, you can certainly have a huge garden when a small green space seems a luxury in the city. In the country, you don’t have so mucn worries. You can enjoy the pleasure of work by planting seeds in the earth and watching them grow into flowers and finally into fruits or food. But rural life may not be that perfect. Things are going so slowly that sometimes you may feel that you are absolute left behind in some remote
corners of the world. You may again miss the parties, friends and movies in the city.
Like anything else, country life and city life have their advantages and disadvantages. The best solution may be that you enjoy pleasures of both lives and get rid of their inconveniences.

There are many differences between middle school and the college. First，in middle school，we have to listen to what the teacher says in class, to

1. 写前阶段：写作提纲
1) 对两个对象或一个对象的两个方面进行比较与对照分析，找出相似点/不同之处。
2. 写作阶段：利用相关资料，组织结构与内容
1) Useful words and phrases:
比较 ：like, similarly, likewise, in the same way, in the same manner, equally. 对照： by contrast, on the contrary, while, whereas, on the other hand, unlike, instead, but, conversely, different from, however, nevertheless, otherwise, whereas, unlike, yet, in contrast.
2）Useful expressions
Ø Just like a coin has two sides, everyting has its advantages and disadvantages, and … is no exception.
Ø The advantage far outweigh the disadvantages.
Ø The advantages of A are much greater than those of B.
Ø A may be preferable to B, but A suffers from the disadvantages that... Ø For all the disadvantages, it has its compensating advantages. Ø Like anything else, it has its faults.
Ø A and B has several points in common.

对比和比较型结构的论说文是英语考试作文中的一种常见的命题方式。即要求对两个或两个以上的事物、事件、观点作比较，通过它们之间相同或相异之处的比较，看出它们各自的特点或优缺点。
两种基本方法：
1. 事物与事物整体对比（Subject-by-Subject）
eg. Where to Buy House
In the last few years cities dwellers have begun to choose to live in the suburbs. It is estimated that by the year 2010, nearly one third of people in Shanghai will buy houses in the less heavily populated areas at the edge of the city. Why is there a change in the attitudes toward the central city? What are the advantages of living in the suburbs?(用数据引出许多城市人到郊区买房子的倾向。为什么？为倾向性的比较作好准备)
It is obvious that living in the city center is becoming less attractive. （主题句）For one thing, the soaring prices of housing in the city center force more and more people to move to the periphery. For another, the city centers--now full of petrol fumes and toxic gases, and torn by the roar of buses and lorries--are increasingly perceived as among the least desirable areas to live in despite the social and cultural advantages city life can offer.（揭示人们不原住市中心的原因：房价高，环境污染）
On the other hand, suburbs are no longer suburbs in a traditional sense. (过渡句） These areas have combined advantages of both urban and rural living, and have blurred the dividing line between city and countryside. All young children, whatever their culture, are alike in their charm and innocence--in being a clean slate on which the wonders and ways of the world are yet to be written. First, young American children tend to be active, enthusiastic and direct. They express themselves openly whatever they want to say.
