在几万年前的原始时代,远古人学会了用语言来表达意思,后来又学会了用手势,但有些事物用语言和手势是难以表达的,于是有人想出了做记号的方法,可记号太多,容易忘记,后来就用图形表达意思,比如“太阳”就画成一个圆圈的形状,“树”就画成树的模样,最早的象形文字就是这样产生的.
随着时间的推移,人类进入了奴隶社会.到了这时,需要文字记载的东西就更多了,而光用一些图形符号来表示,显得太繁琐了.于是人们就简化了一些象形字,并把一些象形字组合起来,形成一种新的文字,让人能更容易看懂.比如把“人”和“木”组合起来,就成了“休”字,意思是一个人靠在树上睡觉.这样又创造出了很多文字,形成了汉字的一个新类型——会意字.
到了春秋战国时期,中国大地上出现了许许多多的诸侯国,而这些诸侯国的文字又有所区别,于是出现了一字多义、多字一义的情况,这给各国之间的文化交流带来了困难.秦始皇统一六国后,曾下令在全国统一使用一种文字——小篆.这种文字比以前的文字简化了许多,但仍有些繁琐,于是民间逐步兴起了一种应急的俗体——隶书.到了三国时期,魏国的钟繇又创造出了一种更为简便美观的文字——楷书.从此以后,汉字就确立了它的方块形态,开始有了间架结构.以后人们又陆续创造了草书、行书等各种各样的字体,也涌现出了像“钟、王”、“颜、柳”、“苏、黄、米、蔡”这些举世闻名的书法家.汉字的发展逐步进入到了一个较高的层次.
而随着汉字的发展,汉字的个数也越来越多,于是就出现了一种便于人们查找汉字的工具,像《说文解字》、《康熙字典》等等.
