Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years.The holiday has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries.From the Roman"s Pomona Day,to the Celtic festival of Samhain,to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France,lived the Celts (凯尔特人),who worshipped (崇拜) nature and had many gods,with the sun god as their favorite.They celebrated their New Year on November 1st which was made every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold." On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished (消失).The Druids,the Celtic priests,would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred).They would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals.As they danced around the fires,the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin.When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires.These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits.The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronounced "sow-en").The festival would last for 3 days.Many people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals.This festival would become the first Halloween.The Celtics would carry a lantern (灯笼) when they walked on the eve of October 31.These lanterns were carved out of big turnips (大头菜) and the lights were believed to keep the evil spirits away.Children would carve faces in the turnips.These carved turnips were called "jack-o-lanterns

WHAT IS HALLOWEEN?
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31.By tradition,Halloween begins after sunset.Long ago,people believed that witches gathered together and ghosts roamed the world on Halloween.Today,most people no longer believe in ghosts and witches.But these supernatural beings are still a part of Halloween.
The colors black and orange are also a part of Halloween.Black is a symbol for night and orange is the color of pumpkins.A jack-o’-lantern is a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carved on one side.Candles are usually placed inside,giving the face a spooky glow.
DRESSING IN COSTUMES
Dressing in masks and costumes is a popular Halloween activity.Costumes can be traditional and scary,such as a witch’s pointy hat and black gown.Costumes may also have a modern flavor.Many children dress up as movie characters or a favorite superhero.
But Halloween is not just for children.Many adults enjoy showing off their costumes at Halloween parties!
TRICK-OR-TREATING
Once in costume,children go from house to house saying “Trick or treat!” In the past,children might play a “trick” on people who did not give treats.They might pelt houses with eggs or old tomatoes,or play other pranks.Today,children’s cries of “Trick or treat!” are usually rewarded with candy.
HOW HALLOWEEN GOT STARTED
One of the oldest Halloween traditions comes from the ancient Celts,who lived in western and central Europe long ago.The Celts celebrated a holiday called Samhain on October 31.After sunset that day,people believed that spirits of the dead would rise and walk the earth.The Celts made offerings of food and drink to keep the spirits away.
Beginning about 2,000 years ago,the Roman Empire conquered many Celtic peoples.But Celtic traditions,including Samhain,remained strong in areas such as Ireland and Scotland,even after the Roman conquest.
The Roman Catholic Church tried to replace Samhain in 835 with All Saints’ Day,a day to honor saints of the Church.The eve of All Saints’ Day is October 31.It is called Allhallows or Hallowmas by the Church.
HOW DID HALLOWEEN COME TO AMERICA?
Halloween first came to America with early settlers from Celtic areas in Europe,such as Ireland and Scotland.But other American settlers with strict religious beliefs,including the Puritans from England,rejected Halloween.The arrival of many Irish immigrants during the 1800s helped spread Halloween’s popularity.
But by the late 1800s,fewer people believed in ancient superstitions of ghosts and witches.Halloween became more a holiday for children to receive treats and dress in costume.

淡然回首，暮然去看那呈y=x一样飞逝的时间。心情竟突兀的沉静。午夜时分，告别尘世喧嚣，独守电脑前，十指在键盘上飞跃，翩然起舞，一行行蝇头小楷（貌似是隶书）伴随着噼里啪啦的声音如音符般跳跃在耀眼的屏幕上。

脑海里犹如放电影一般，2个月的高中生活一点一滴的出现在眼前。记忆深处是志愿卡上填涂24国际时的迟疑不定，2B铅笔在手中轻轻颤抖，笔尖一次次落下又拿开，心幽幽的疼着，大脑里编织着未来的生活。闭上眼睛，做最后的决定。妈妈的手轻轻搭在我肩上，孩子，只要你决定，我们就支持，而且，你不是一直想出国念书吗？微微把笔尖立起，一道黑墨印出现在志愿卡上。是的，在您的支持下，我选择了24国际。这一笔，掷地有声。

亲爱的爸爸妈妈，其实那一刻，我深知这条路的艰辛坎坷，我也明白年过半百的父亲为了三年乃至未来无底洞一般的学费需要付出多少。谢谢您们，从小到大，只要是我想要的东西，只要合理，您们都会满足，这一次——这决定一生的时候，亦不例外。您们想给我最好的教育。想让我做到最好。可是2个月的生活，让我对您说一声抱歉。

回忆着近70个日夜，午夜梦回，流下多少无声的泪水。英语真心不是我的强项，我可以轻松的用汉语搞懂化合价、金属价、离子价……可以完美的答出一篇说明文阅读。但是，换成英语，一切都变了。基础好的同学上课积极回应老师的一切问题时，我却低头一手抄笔记，一手摁电子词典。他们可以轻松的在英语阅读中得到高分，而我蒙的却比做的准确率高。

记得Holloween的中午，走廊上，班主任老师找我谈心，她说，她一直以为我应该是班级的佼佼者，因为，她觉得我语文好应该英语也好。在老师面前，我哭了。老师说，她找我不是给我施加压力，而是给予帮助和动力。中考英语，我不过是靠着点小聪明，靠着临阵磨枪，不快而光，才取得了比平时好一点的成绩。那个初三，为了英语，我付出了简直等如同于数学的精力。万圣节那天有谁知道，我和大家笑得时候其实一直含着泪。

好多同学说，国际部是不是特轻松，我说不。他们嗤之以鼻。我不再回答。呵~每个人有自己的世界观，没必要去要求被人摘下自己的有色眼睛看真实的世界。

但我想问自己，我轻松吗？组织黑熊义卖活动到托福模拟考。可以说，班级乃至学校的每一样活动我都亲身经历过。一次次的monthly text付出多少，回报多少……教CHEMISTRY的Mr.Shand说：“A deline you are improve for this text，that means you do not study before。”老师你说这话时，我真的无语了、我必须无辜地看着你。。是啊，我还是需要努力加油的。最近筹备耶鲁模联，今天培训结束，从学校里走出时已经6点40。除了奋斗的高三，整个24中已被黑夜和无声吞噬。寂寞涌上心头，苦笑着走出大门。这一天，我有顽强的度过了……

最变态是托福模拟考试，我悲剧的发现写作竟然是我听说读写里得分最高的。看来，初中哪些作文大奖证书没白得，语言还是相通的，这，是我这个月来，唯一得到安慰的事情。

晨曦与昏晓交替，我的生活穿插在其中，酸甜苦辣咸，五味杂谈。生活虽然无趣而重复，但还是要度过的。

Belgium On Christmas Eve,it starts with a drink and “nibbles1)”,followed by a “starter” course such as seafood,and then stuffed turkey．The dessert is a kind of cake made with cream．Father Christmas is called “Saint Nicholas” and he brings presents to children on Dec ember 6th,“St．Nicholas Day,” a long time before Christmas．
Brazil Father Christmas is called Papai Noel．Many Christmas customs are similar to those in the USA or UK．For those who have enough money,a special Christmas meal will be chicken,turkey,ham,rice,salad,pork,fresh and dried fruits,often with beer．Poorer people will just have chicken and rice．
Finland Finnish people believe that Father Christmas（Santa Claus）lives in the north part of Finland called Korvatunturi,north of the Arctic Circle．People from all over the world send letters to Santa Claus in Finland．There is a even big tourist theme park called “Christmas Land” in the north of Finland,near to where they say that Father Christmas lives．Everyone cleans their houses ready for the three holy days of Christmas－－Christmas Eve,Christmas Day,and Boxing Day2)．Christmas Eve is very special,when people eat rice porridge3) and plum4) fruit juice in the morning．They will then decorate a spruce5) tree in the home．Many families will visit cemeteries and graveyards to place a candle onto the burial graves of family members．Cemeteries are very beautiful at Christmas－time．

Russia In the days of the Soviet Union,Christmas was not celebrated very much．New Year was the important time－－when “Father Frost” brought presents to children．Now Christmas can be openly celebrated－－either on December25th；or more often on January 7th．This unusual date is because the Russian Orthodox church uses the old“Julian”calendar9) for religious celebration days．Special Christmas food includes cakes,pies and “meat dumplings．”
